ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Newts in Knoxville scavenger hunt is a great way to experience our downtown vibe, explore our favorite attractions, and meet some of East Tennessee’s most interesting amphibian residents! Grab a passport, study the clues, and see if you can find all 12 bronze newts hidden amid our downtown landmarks.

This art installation is permanent, walkable, and entirely outdoors, so you can get to know our newt neighbors anytime you like.

Pick up your passport on Gay Street at one of two locations. Visit the Knoxville Visitors Center on the corner of Gay and Summit Hill, or drop by specialty emporium Mast General Store near Wall Avenue. While you’re out searching, be sure to browse all the nifty newt merch and treats available at our local businesses!

THE ARTIST

Celebrated metalworks artist Preston Farabow consulted with local wildlife ecologists to make the newts as lifelike as possible. He spent three months sculpting detailed critters out of clay, which were then cast into bronze at his local foundry, Aespyre Metals.

WHY NEWTS?

Did you know East Tennessee is the newtiest place on the planet? Southern Appalachia is a true hotspot for these fascinating creatures. So, when it came time for Downtown Knoxville to pick a friendly face for our latest adventure, the choice was clear.

Representing the Eastern newt, a type of salamander and member of the amphibian family, the Knoxville Newts hope to give a nod to the important role our salamanders play in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. According to the National Parks Service, ‘The Great Smoky Mountains are known as the ‘Salamander Capital of the World,’ boasting more species of salamanders than any other location on Earth.”

We hope the Knoxville Newts not only pay tribute to the incredible biodiversity in our own backyard, but also inspire curiosity, education, and conservation for generations to come.
